Chapter Twelve
“What are you doing here?” Carmen asked, leaning against the door. She knew she sounded rude, but there was no need to pretend she and Trent Knight were friends even if he made her heart gallop. Especially since he made her heart gallop.
He blew out a breath. “May I come in?”
She stepped back. “This is a surprise.”
“I hope I didn’t interrupt anything.”
“No.” The quaint room was not designed for entertaining. With only one chair, seating was limited. She waved him to the chair and settled on the bed. Having him sit where she slept felt too intimate.
She inhaled, trying to fill her lungs, and got a whiff of clean male with just the right hint of aftershave. He didn’t speak as he looked around. Did he have any idea how he overwhelmed the room?
“You wanted to talk to me?” she prompted, when she could no longer stand the silence.
“Yes. I spoke to Alyssa. She said you’re returning to New York.”
“Tomorrow. So if you came to make sure I’m leaving, you wasted your time. I have my plane ticket. As you can see, my bags are packed.” She gestured to the suitcase beside the dresser.
She stood, hoping he would take the hint. It hurt, knowing he couldn’t wait to see the back of her.
He didn’t stand.
Instead, he gestured to the bed. “Please sit down.”
She hesitated, then perched on the edge of the bed. Despite the fact that their relationship was strained at best, she found herself noticing little things about him she shouldn’t. Like the way the powerful muscles in his thighs moved as he shifted his legs. Or the way his faded T-shirt molded his sculpted chest and shoulders. Or the thick lashes framing his dark eyes. There were plenty of good-looking men in New York, but none of them had his rugged appeal.
“Alyssa has grown quite fond of you.”
Carmen’s smile came easily. “The feeling is mutual.”
“She was upset tonight. She doesn’t want you to leave.”
“I bet you hate that. I bet you can’t wait for me to be gone.”
He steepled his fingers. “Truth? I’m torn. It would be less complicated if you were gone. But...”
Carmen’s stupid heart skipped a beat. “But what?”
“Alyssa’s been having a rough go of it.”
“I know. I’ve tried to help.”
He nodded, then his head shot up. He pierced her with his eyes. “Why?”
“Why was I trying to help?”
“Yes.”
She sighed and then walked to the window. A slight breeze blew, ruffling the leaves on the trees. An owl hooted in the distance. “A couple of reasons. First, I know what it’s like to be an outsider.”
“You?”
“Yeah, me.”
“Your family is the richest in town and one of the richest in the state. Most people in Sweet Briar either work for your father or know someone who does. He was the puppet master, controlling both the former mayor and chief of police. I can’t picture you being an outsider.”
“Think about it. Kids whose parents worked for my father were told to be nice to me.
